The site of Pompey's Pillar & Serapeum is a strange place, originally the main temple
of Serapis, the Serapeum stood here, situated on top of a rocky outcrop and 100 steps in
front of it. The pillar, with its circumference of 9 metres and
height of 25 metres was later added to the complex in 293 CE, in honour of Diocletian.

The Roman Theatre is modest in size, but in excellent condition. Seating only 700-800 spectators
on it's marble seats, but with more room for more in it's crudely made galleries. The structure
deviates from the typical oval amphitheatre, being semi-circular. Surprisingly small,
allowing quite limited shows being performed, mainly for theatrical performances.

Counted for the best collection of items from the Classical era, with plenty
of excellent statues, sarcophagus, jewels, textiles and tiny objects of all sorts. The museum
reflects Alexandria's importance as the scene of the Serapis cult, a creation by
Ptolemy 1, intended to merge Egyptian and Greek religion. Serapis was married to the Egyptian
goddess Isis.

Built by Abbas 2, Montazah Palace was the last khedive of Egypt, around 1900. It
lent design ideas from both the Ottoman Empire and Florence in Italy. The result is by
all means attractive and the building is closed to the public, but the surrounding gardens
and the beach are open for all visitors, paying a small admission.
