The Egyptian government established the ‘Service des Antiques de l’Egypte’ in 1835 mainly to
halt the plundering of archeological sites and to arrange the exhibition of the collected
artifacts owned by the government. At first, the Azbakian Garden was used as a storage
place, later the collection was transferred to another building in the
citadel of Saladin.

of Cairo, and predates what is now modern Cairo. It is believed that there was a settlement here as
early as the 6th century BC. Originally twenty churches, built within an area of just one square

Cairo is Islamic, though some areas are more so than others. Actually, this area is no more Islamic than
Central Cairo, but as though walking through a time machine we are transported back to Cairo's past
Islamic heritage, to a world of ancient mosques and 1,500 hundred year old markets, to medieval forts
and the city that was Salah ad-Din's.

In the 12th century, Saladin and his successors built an impenetrable bastion in the Citadel,
using the most advanced construction techniques of the age. For the next 700 years, Egypt was
ruled from this hill. Today, only the green-domed mosque and a fragment of al-Qasr al-Ablaq (the striped
palace) remain. The Citadel's appearance is the vision of Muhammad 'Ali.
