The City of the Dead, or Zawiyet el-Mayyiteen, the World's largest burial ground.
A bustling grid of tombs and mausoleums where people live and work amongst their dead and ancestors.
It's foundation dates back to the Arab conquest of Egypt in 642 AD. The Arab commander, Amr ibn al As,
established his family’s graveyard at the foot of the hill al Moqattam.

'The Monastery of the Virgin Mary' at Gebel El-Teir is an important Christian site near the city of
Samalut. Built by Empress Helena, in 328, on one of the sites where the Holy Family is believed
to have stayed during its flight into Egypt. The small church interior is cut directly into the
rock, pillars form a tiny squared court in front of the typical sacred platform.

The story of the site outshines the site itself. There is really
little to see of Akhenaten's capital of the 14th century BCE (1374-1360), both due to effective
demolition of his enemies and for large areas are still unexcavated. Akhenaten declared the
worship of the formerly inferior sun-god Aten, as the only accepted cult and Aten was declared as the only
god.

Beni Hassan in itself is a modest little village, but in the
limestone cliffs over it, 39 tombs from the Middle Kingdom are located. These tombs were built
for feudal lords, and they come full with decorations in frescos. Events from their military and
political life are spread out on these frescos, in between everyday scenes.

Near to the modern entrance to the catacombs is the tomb
of Petosiris, constructed to look like a temple. The outside
is decorated in typical Late Period style, whilst the outer court is decorated in a
Greek style. The tomb was constructed around the time of the conquest of Egypt by
Alexander the Great, and seems to have been decorated like this to curry favour
with the new rulers of Egypt.
